However, in patients with suspected cancer with unknown cause of elevation of serum tumor markers, its role has not yet been defined. We present a patient without previous history of malignant disease, who had progressive elevation of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA). The conventional diagnostic procedures detected no abnormal findings that might have induced the elevation of CEA. FDG-PET images demonstrated two FDG-avid lesions in both lobes of the thyroid gland. The pathologic findings confirmed the diagnosis of medullary thyroid cancer. The serum CEA level returned to normal range after operation.

High CEA levels in a case of resected colorectal cancer: delayed diagnosis of metachronous medullary thyroid cancer
BACKGROUND Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) is one of the most widely used tumor markers, and its value in the surveillance of post-operative colorectal cancer is well established. Fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) has been clinically used in colorectal cancer imaging including preoperative staging, evaluation of therapeutic response, detection of disease recurrence, and i...

Purpose. To perform an overview about the role of positron emission tomography (PET) or PET/computed tomography (PET/CT) using different radiopharmaceuticals in recurrent medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) based on biochemical findings (increased tumor marker levels after primary surgery). Methods. A comprehensive literature search of studies published in PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, and Embase datab...
متن کاملReview of fluorine-18-2-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) in the follow-up of medullary and anaplastic thyroid carcinomas.
BACKGROUND The goal of posttreatment follow-up for medullary and anaplastic thyroid cancer (MTC and ATC) is the early diagnosis of recurrence or metastases. However, routine follow-up protocols, including physical examination and clinically oriented investigations, are not standardized, and their sensitivity in accurately detecting recurrent or metastatic disease is often suboptimal. A valuable...

متن کاملThe role of positron emission tomography-computed tomography/magnetic resonance imaging in the management of sarcoidosis patients.
Sarcoidosis is a multisystem granulomatous disease of unknown etiology. The diagnosis is based on clinical and radiographic findings as well as by histopathological findings. Molecular imaging in recent years has made important progress regarding the study of various inflammatory diseases including sarcoidosis. Positron emission tomography (PET) provides an insight in metabolism of this disease...
